Kos, the beautiful
island of "Hippocrates - father of
Medicine" according to the Greeks,
"the jewel of the Aegean" according
to the foreign visitors is the third largest
island of the group and one of the most
popular to visitors. It has an extent
of 290 square kilometres and a coastline
120 kilometres long. On the island the
visitor will "discover" the
excellent climate, will admire the green
mountains decorated with the white spots
of the small scenic settlements and villages
full of flowers, will be charmed by the
excellent beaches with crystal-clear waters,
will learn about the glorious past and
will live a fascinating present. The history
of the island goes back to the legendary
periods of Mythology; then comes the period
of glory as the relics of the past show.
The ancient city, the plane tree of Hippocrates,
the Asclepion, the castles of the Knights
of St. John and the nice buildings of
the period of the Italian domination seize
the eye of the visitor and compete successfully
with the wonderful beaches.
